Pre-Op Instructions
A little preparation goes a long way. Following your pre-operative instructions helps your surgery go smoothly and sets you up for the best possible recovery. This page walks you through everything you need to know before your appointment.
Your Appointment
Once your surgery is confirmed, make note of your date and time. Plan to arrive 15 to 30 minutes early so you have time to complete any remaining paperwork and get settled before your procedure. If anything changes and you need to reschedule, just give us a call as soon as possible — we’re happy to work with you.
In the Days Leading Up to Surgery
A few things to take care of before the big day:
- Arrange for a trusted adult to drive you to and from your appointment. If you’re receiving sedation or anesthesia, this is required — you won’t be able to drive yourself home
- Set up a comfortable space at home where you can rest afterward
- Stock your kitchen with soft, easy foods like soups, yogurt, smoothies, and mashed potatoes
- Fill any prescribed medications ahead of time so they’re ready when you need them
The Day Before Your Surgery
Keep things simple the day before. Avoid alcohol and smoking for at least 24 hours prior to your procedure and do your best to get a good night’s sleep. It also helps to confirm your transportation and make sure your companion knows the plan.
The Day of Your Surgery
If you’re receiving sedation, follow your fasting instructions carefully. These exist for your safety, and your team will review them with you in advance. A few other things to keep in mind:
- Take any approved medications with a small sip of water, only if your surgeon has instructed you to do so
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing and supportive shoes
- Skip the jewelry, contact lenses, nail polish, and makeup
- Brush your teeth and rinse thoroughly before leaving the house
- Arrive a little early to take care of any last-minute paperwork without feeling rushed

Before Your Surgery — Common Questions
Contact our office as soon as possible. Depending on the instruction, we may need to reschedule your procedure for your safety. The most critical ones — like fasting before sedation — are non-negotiable, so reach out right away if there’s any uncertainty.
Some medications are fine to take, and others may need to be paused. Your care team will go over this with you specifically during your consultation or pre-operative appointment. When in doubt, call us before the day of your surgery.
Bring a valid photo ID, your insurance card, and any co-pays or forms you’ve been asked to complete. Leave valuables at home when possible, and make sure your companion knows where to wait and how long to expect to be there.
